The question that I often get from clients is whether custom window treatments are really worth the time and expense. And the answer is yes they are completely worth the cost, 99% of the time. Window treatments completely transform a space, making it look more finished and expensive – and not just because they are pricey, because when compared to the cost of some of the ones you can find online, having custom window treatments can end up actually not costing that much more. I’ve had clients who have spent even more on ready made shades than it would cost to have them professionally done, especially since they have needed to add in the cost of installation which is included in the quote from your window guy (or girl. Mine’s a guy so I guess I just imagine they all are).
Now I have a caveat – all window treatments fabricators are the same, and some companies will try to force you to choose from their books of fabric which ends up defeating the purpose. When you do that, you’re not getting the expertise of a designer or the breadth of choice that there is available. They’re now going to suggest a trim to tie in colors from your pillows or a pretty pattern that you love but wouldn’t have come across on your own. The window person is typically trying to steer you towards their preferred fabric vendors that they can make a good profit from, and don’t actually have your homes best interest at heart. It’s important to do your research (yelp, asking friends who’ve had their windows done, consult a designer or a friend with good taste) before you choose a company to create your window treatments and choose a fabric.
Window treatments are like the home’s equivalent of good tailoring…not always completely necessary, but when done right they just look perfect and like they’re made for the room – because they are! They’re definitely expensive but will be make a huge difference in how your home is viewed and will last for ages.

The 1% of the time where custom window treatments don’t matter as much are when you have a standard sized window and are just looking for a simple white linen shade, or a bamboo/matchstick type shade. Places like Restoration Hardware or Pottery Barn sell great natural linen shades, and I like to buy inexpensive matchstick shades from Overstock. They can look just as good as custom ones in my opinion, and can be super affordable. But do me a favor and price these out in comparison with a professional quote – you may be surprised that you’re not actually saving that much money by compromising with ready made ones.
I understand there are times when it’s just not feasible to do custom window treatments, like if you’re renting, or you just can’t imagine living without any window coverings while you save up for good ones. In this case, I’d suggest simple ones linen or matchsticks for Roman shades like I mentioned above. And if you’re in need of curtains then consider purchasing double panels to stack on either side of your window or doors, as the ones sold in stores often can look a little skimpy. Also err on the side of installing them too high – curtains installed right above your window frames look stubby and make the ceilings appear shorter than they are. Also – measure, double check your measurements, and measure again. Trust me.
